What an RCA “renewal” actually means
“Renewal” is simply the familiar term. In practice, nothing is extended: you enter into a new contract scheduled to start exactly when your current one ends, so the vehicle is never left without cover.
The practical consequence is that nothing happens automatically. If you do not take out a new policy, the old one simply expires — with no mandatory reminder and no automatic extension.
- Your details are already in the system. Your bonus-malus class, claims history, and vehicle details are retrieved from insurers’ databases, which makes the process quicker.
- You do not have to stay with the same insurer. Renewal does not tie you to your current company. You can compare and switch without a penalty.
- The price is recalculated in full. A claim-free year means a better bonus class and usually a lower premium.
If you have just bought or are currently registering the vehicle, you need a new policy rather than a renewal — see RCA for registration or RCA for temporary plates .
Why renewing without a gap matters
A gap between the old and new policy is not just a legal risk. It is also a commercial risk: you may lose access to offers.
Some insurers do not automatically quote a vehicle after an interruption in cover. Their system simply returns no price. Where an offer is available, it may be conditional on a risk inspection.
In practical terms, a delay of only a few days can remove several insurers from your comparison — including the one that might have offered the best price. Renewing before expiry gives you the full list and avoids extra steps.
How early can you renew RCA?
Up to 60 days before the start date. The period was doubled from the previous 30-day limit so drivers can compare offers without last-day pressure.
- If your current policy expires on 15 November, you can buy the new one from 16 September with cover starting on 16 November.
- The two policies do not overlap and you do not pay twice — the new policy simply waits for its start date.
- For vehicles that are already registered, an RCA policy can start no earlier than the day after it is issued.
Our recommendation: renew 7–14 days before expiry. You have time to compare, avoid even one uninsured day, and do not tie up your money two months early.

Receive the policy by email
Your legally valid PDF arrives within minutes and can be kept electronically or printed. You do not need to cancel anything with your current insurer — the old policy expires on its own.
What happens if your RCA has expired
There is no grace period. From the first day after expiry, the vehicle is uninsured and penalties apply immediately:
- A fine of 1,000 to 2,000 lei under Article 37(9) of Law 132/2017.
- Your registration certificate and plates can be retained immediately until you present a valid policy.
- You bear the full cost of compensation if you cause an accident. There is no insurer to pay on your behalf and no coverage limit protecting you.
- You may lose access to some offers. After a gap in cover, some insurers stop quoting automatically while others require a risk inspection.
The biggest risk is not the fine but the cost of an accident. Compensation after an accident involving injury and no RCA can far exceed the value of the vehicle.
This also applies to a parked vehicle. RCA is mandatory for the registered vehicle, not only while it is being driven. Checks can be carried out without stopping you in traffic.

The official AIDA database. Enter the registration number or VIN to see whether the policy is active, its validity period, and the issuing insurer on aida.info.ro
Check your RCA even if you are sure there is still time. Many expired-policy fines go to drivers who simply forgot the date.
Bonus-malus class — how to keep your discount
Your bonus-malus class records your claims history on a scale from B8, the best bonus, to M8, the highest malus, with B0 as the starting point.
| Situation | Effect at renewal |
|---|---|
| One year with no paid claims | Move up one bonus class → pay less |
| One claim paid last year | Move down two classes → pay more |
| Switch insurer | Keep your full bonus |
| Gap in coverage | May limit the available offers |

You do not have to renew with the same insurer
Many drivers automatically accept their current insurer’s offer, assuming it must be best because they are an existing customer. In practice, the difference between the lowest and highest quote for the same vehicle and driver can exceed several hundred lei per year.
Every insurer uses its own risk model and adjusts prices according to exposure to vehicle categories, age groups, and counties. The company offering the best price last year may be the most expensive this year.
Switching requires no special formalities: you cancel nothing, notify no one, and keep your bonus.
Renew for 1, 6, or 12 months — what to choose
An RCA policy can be taken out for any period between 1 and 12 months, in whole-month increments.
- 12 months — usually the best monthly value and the least hassle. The standard choice if you are keeping the vehicle.
- 6 months — useful if you want to review the price halfway through the year or have a tighter budget.
- 1–3 months — suitable if you plan to sell the vehicle or use it seasonally.
If you sell the vehicle, its RCA does not transfer to the new owner. You can request cancellation and a refund for the remaining period, although a shorter policy may be simpler than cancelling.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about RCA renewal
Which file should I upload and where do I find it?
Upload your current RCA policy as a PDF or photo. If you bought it online, look in your email. A clear phone photo of a paper copy is also enough. We accept PDF, JPG, and PNG.
What happens to the policy I upload?
It is used only to prefill the form. The transfer is encrypted and the file is deleted after the new policy is issued. We do not share it with anyone other than your chosen insurer.
Can I renew without uploading the old policy?
Yes. Uploading only saves data-entry time. You can enter everything manually using the vehicle registration certificate and an identity document.
What if the extracted details are incorrect?
Every field remains editable. Review and correct anything read from the policy before generating offers. The final details are the ones you confirm.
How early can I renew an RCA policy?
Up to 60 days before the new policy starts. In practice, we recommend renewing 7–14 days before the current policy expires.
Does RCA renew automatically?
No. RCA never extends automatically, regardless of insurer. You need to take out a new policy before the expiry date.
Do I lose my bonus if I switch insurer?
No. Your bonus-malus class is linked to you and the vehicle, not the insurer, and is retrieved automatically from the database.
What fine applies for driving with expired RCA?
The fine is 1,000 to 2,000 lei under Article 37(9) of Law 132/2017, plus retention of the registration certificate and plates. If you cause an accident, you bear the full compensation cost.
Is there a grace period after RCA expires?
No. From the first day after expiry, the vehicle is considered uninsured both in traffic and while parked on public land.
What happens after a gap between policies?
Besides the legal risk, you may lose access to offers. Some insurers do not automatically quote vehicles with a coverage gap, while others may require a risk inspection.
How can I check my RCA expiry date for free?
Use aida.info.ro or the troco.ro RCA checker with the vehicle registration number or VIN.
Must I cancel my old policy before renewing?
No. The current policy expires on its own. The new one starts exactly when the old one ends, with no overlap or double payment.
Can I renew if my RCA has already expired?
Yes, you can buy a new policy at any time. For a registered vehicle, it can start no earlier than the day after issue. Do not drive the vehicle until then.
Can I renew RCA for a vehicle that is not in my name?
Yes. Anyone can take out the RCA policy, but the owner details from the registration certificate must be entered correctly, and the price is calculated using the declared main user.
How much does RCA renewal cost in 2026?
The price is recalculated at every renewal based on your bonus-malus class, age, vehicle type, and registration county. Comparing offers shows the current price for your profile.
